7-Mile Haines Highway Shooting Range

Chilkat Environmental was selected by Bureau of Land Management in a competitive bid to remove vehicles and buried drums, construct 8-foot perimeter fence, prepare a workplan and conduct characterization for the unauthorized shooting area. BLM and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation were concerned about contaminated soil and this concern was preventing conveyance of the property to the state. XRF screening was performed for 11 metals for over 800 samples in 82 grids supported by 50 laboratory samples including Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure confirming cleanup level of 400 ppm for lead.  Investigation was performed to define the nature and extent of contaminated soil.
